Life can be busy and full of distractions, so when we experience a moment that seems unaffected by all of that, it can be a blessing. I had one of those moments recently while visiting a friend. Sam had just been admitted to a rehabilitation facility after being hospitalized with a sudden illness. When I arrived, I asked Sam how she was feeling, we chit chatted for a bit, and then I asked her if she wanted me to read to her. She asked if we could pray. We prayed together and then talked some more, but when it looked like it might be too much of an effort for her to continue the conversation, I began reading quietly to myself. I can’t say how Sam experienced things that day, but I felt a special peace as we sat there together in silence. That moment reminded me of the value of just being with someone, and that sometimes it’s what’s unsaid that fills the heart to full.
